Enthusiastic Desire

This morning as I was reading our Relief Society lesson for today I recalled Grandma Karma Parkinson's example.

The lesson (#12 of George Albert Smith Teachings) is about having an enthusiastic desire to share the gospel truths with others.  An image of the copy of the Book of Mormon came to my mind.  Attached to the inside cover was a photo of Grandma and Kathy, her caregiver, and their testimony.

This came about because of someone's suggestion to share the gospel with others in this way.  Their hearts were touched to participate.  Grandma realized that although she had always tried to live by the principles of the Gospel and felt a strong testimony of the truth, she had never read the Book of Mormon, cover to cover.  As I recall, Kathy hadn't read it either and not knowing how to read very well felt inadequate to the task of reading it.  So they determined to read it together.  Every day for weeks and I suppose some months they read together and shared their thoughts.

Grandma was at least 90!  It meant a great deal to her to at last read the book that made such a great difference in her long life and the lives of her family and friends.  It was important to them both.  Though pretty much homebound, they prepared copies of the Book of Mormon to give to others somewhere in the world.

Reading The Book of Mormon every day makes a difference in teaching us truths as well as reminding and directing us through the day.  It also kindles a desire to do what is right and makes a difference for good.
